FAQs

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative approach that combines ketamine treatment with psychotherapy sessions before and after dosing (and sometimes during dosing). Ketamine induces neural plasticity, creating a unique window of opportunity for more effective therapeutic interventions.

How does Noma ensure safety?

Noma prioritizes patient safety through multiple measures. Medication response is carefully reviewed after each dose and shipped two at a time, requiring an adult signature upon delivery to reduce abuse risk. Additionally, all at-home dosing sessions are virtually monitored by trained guides who facilitate appropriate set and setting, while also providing immediate intervention if needed.

How do I bill for my services?

As a therapist, you will charge patients your psychotherapy rate and can bill insurance with standard CPT codes (e.g. 90837). Noma will separately charge the patient for ketamine and prescriber encounters, which are covered in-network by most major insurance providers.

How does Noma support therapists?

We offer weekly office hours with our prescribers and KAP experts, and facilitate communication via HIPAA-compliant chat. Our collaborative approach ensures therapists have access to consistent guidance, ongoing education, and the latest best practices, empowering them to provide high-quality care while focusing on their core strength of psychotherapy.

Do I need special training?

As a licensed therapist, you already possess the core skills needed for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. However, as part of your onboarding process, we will guide you through the differences between traditional therapy and KAP.

How are you different from other ketamine providers?

Noma works to ensure that ketamine is only prescribed to appropriate patients and to mitigate the risk of diversion and dependence.  We aim to help people who haven’t had much success with more traditional mental health treatments but who are not categorized as severely mentally ill.

Our clinical leaders, including our CEO, are experienced clinicians with a deep commitment to science-informed practice that is in the best interest of the patient.  We have made a deliberate decision to focus heavily on what the research shows will have the best outcomes. In our case, this means a focus on unleashing the potential of psychotherapy through ketamine. While ketamine can be effective short-term, research shows that patients often relapse in as little as 2-3 weeks.¹ However, ketamine combined with psychotherapy maximizes and prolongs its benefits.²

What types of patients can benefit from Noma treatment?

We accept adults, 18 years or older, who have the ability to consent to treatment, have access to technology and a safe space in their home for dosing sessions, and can provide an emergency contact. Noma is for patients who are not responding to more traditional treatments such as psychotherapy and/or medication (typically two failed trials at adequate dose and duration).

Qualifying diagnoses include moderate to severe unipolar or bipolar depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD. All Noma patients are evaluated for appropriateness by a licensed psychiatric practitioner (MD/DO/NP) before admission.

Psychiatric exclusions typically include active or history of psychosis or SUD, active mania or mixed episode, or personality disorders. However, these will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Medical disqualifiers include uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled hypo- or hyper-thyroidism, unstable cardiovascular disease, and other medical issues at Noma’s discretion.

We do not accept patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
